Experimental Study on Strength and Durability Properties of Concrete Incorporating Binary and Ternary Blends of Metakaoline, Silica Fume and Rice Husk Ash

Abstract

In my present investigation the mechanical properties of reinforced concrete containing cement additives such as Rice Husk Ash (RHA), Silica Fume (SF) and Metakaolin (MK) as partial replacement of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in Binary and Ternary blends. The experimental work involved preparing eleven mix types i.e. control concrete (100% OPC) designated as M1; binary blended mixes (90% C + 10% RHA) designated as M2, (80% C + 20% RHA) designated as M3, (70% C + 30% RHA) designated as M4 and (90% C + 10%  MK) designated as M5 ; ternary blended mixes  (90% C + 5% RHA + 5% MK) designated as M6, (80% C + 10% RHA + 10% MK) designated as M7, (80% C + 10% RHA + 10% MK) designated as M8, (90% C + 5% RHA + 5% SF) designated as M9, (80% PC + 10% RHA + 10% SF) designated as M10 and (80% PC + 10% RHA + 10% SF) designated as M11To achieve the objectives of the investigation, The following properties of the hardened concrete were determined: Compressive strength tests, Split tensile strength tests, Permeability Test. It was found that Rice husk ash (RHA) decreases the compressive strength of the concrete mixes at earlier stages but improves the strength at later ages of curing. Rice husk ash (RHA) increases the splitting tensile strength of concrete mixes. Partial replacement of cement with Metakaolin increases both compressive and splitting tensile strength of the concrete mixes. Partial replacement of cement with combination of MK and RHA increases the compressive strength as well as the splitting tensile strength of the concrete. Partial replacement of cement with 5% MK and 5% RHA is more beneficial than 10% and 20% replacement levels of both mineral admixtures for increasing compressive strength of the concrete. Combination of Silica fume and RHA replacing cement partially is very much helpful in increasing the later age strength of concrete mixes.  10% RHA and 10% SF is having least water absorption among all concrete mixes.
